In a violent resurgence attributed to ISIS, two Russian military officers and five Syrian army personnel were killed in Deir Ezzor, Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the attack, which occurred last Saturday, targeted the forces in a precision strike by militants believed to be part of ISIS cells.
According to the Observatory, the ambush took place in the desert area of Deir Ezzor as the Russian and Syrian troops were deployed there.
The attackers utilized light and medium weapons and coordinated the assault following drone surveillance, amidst a notable silence from Russian officials about the deaths of their officers.
The death toll in the Syrian desert’s military operations has reached 564 since the beginning of 2024, as per the Observatory’s records.
This includes 47 ISIS militants, 460 members of the Syrian army and Iranian militias, and 57 civilians.
Oleg Ignasiyuk, Deputy Head of the Russian Centre for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides in Syria under the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported that more than 7,000 individuals have entered Syrian territory from Lebanon in the past 24 hours.
