Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a significant phone call with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Saturday, focusing on the urgent situations in Lebanon and Gaza.
The discussion emphasized efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, and ensuring unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.
During the conversation, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s role in facilitating Palestinian reconciliation by hosting delegations from both Fatah and Hamas in Cairo. The conversation underscored Egypt’s efforts to mediate and prevent further regional escalation.
In parallel diplomatic efforts, Abdelatty also spoke with France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, where the focus was similarly on Lebanon and Gaza.
Abdelatty expressed concern about the rising violence in Lebanon, particularly following the Israeli military’s targeting of UNIFIL positions, which injured two peacekeepers. He stressed the importance of protecting UN personnel and property in the region.
Both Egypt and Qatar emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in the region. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s position of rejecting any violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also underscored the significance of empowering Lebanese institutions, particularly the Lebanese army, while pushing for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which would strengthen the presence of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon and support the election of a president through Lebanese consensus.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing diplomatic efforts focusing on de-escalating regional tensions and preventing further conflict.
