The Cuban government has formally requested to join BRICS, an economic bloc originally composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as reported by the island’s official media.

Cuba’s application was submitted through a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who currently holds the presidency of the BRICS group.

In June, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez expressed the country’s interest in becoming part of the bloc during his visit to Russia.

This year, BRICS expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Rodríguez emphasized that Cuba views BRICS as a vital platform for promoting global balance and contributing to a new multilateral international order based on sovereignty, equality, democracy, and justice.

Cuba and Russia have strengthened their bilateral relations in recent years, aiming to revive the close cooperation that existed before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited Moscow in early May, marking his second official trip to Russia in under two years.

Cuba’s potential membership in BRICS could bolster its international partnerships, providing the nation with enhanced economic cooperation and a stronger position in the evolving global economic landscape.
