Egypt has called on the Mexican government to expedite investigations into the recent shooting deaths of three Egyptian nationals in Mexico.
The request was made during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty and his Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón on Tuesday.
The three Egyptians were among six migrants killed, including nationals from Peru, Honduras, and El Salvador, when a truck carrying migrants was fired upon by Mexican border police near the US-Mexico border last week. Twelve others, including more Egyptians, were injured.
Egypt’s foreign minister urged Mexico to complete the investigation promptly, allowing the bodies to be repatriated to Cairo, and requested medical care for the injured, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In response, the Mexican foreign minister expressed his deep regret over the incident and assured that the investigation was ongoing, with the results to be shared with Egyptian authorities as soon as they are available.
Earlier, Mexico’s Ministry of Defence said the soldiers opened fire on a truck attempting to evade a military patrol. Mexican media quoted the prosecutor’s office saying the migrants’ vehicle ignored orders to stop and tried to flee before shots were fired.
