Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi praised the Tunisian authorities for arresting 19 individuals involved in smuggling migrants. According to a statement from the Italian Ministry of the Interior on Saturday, the operation resulted in the destruction of 5 boats, the seizure of 9 other boats, 5 rubber boats, 18 engines, vehicles, cash, and mobile phones.

Italy has recently donated three patrol boats to Tunisia to assist in maritime rescue efforts and combat human trafficking. This support is part of ongoing cooperation between Italy and Tunisia on immigration and border monitoring issues.

Illegal immigration from Tunisia to Europe, particularly to Italy, remains a significant challenge. Many migrants, unable to secure visas, see the dangerous sea route as their only option despite the risks involved. The journey often starts from Tunisia’s eastern coast, specifically between Sfax and Mahdia, where a high concentration of clandestine departures occurs. The perilous conditions of this route have earned it the nickname “the death coast” due to the numerous tragedies that have occurred. Efforts by European countries to manage this migration include funding and strategic partnerships aimed at bolstering Tunisia’s ability to control its borders and manage migration more effectively.
