Mohamed al-Menfi, the head of Libya’s Presidential Council, met with Sudan’s Sovereign Council leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to discuss border security and counterterrorism efforts.
The discussions took place on Thursday evening in New York, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, as reported by Libya’s Presidential Council’s media office.
Both leaders reaffirmed the depth of the bilateral relations between their countries, exploring ways to enhance and develop these ties further to benefit their peoples.
They also committed to continued coordination and consultation in regional and international forums, emphasizing their dedication to combating organized crime and terrorism along their shared borders.
Sporadic explosions and the sound of heavy weaponry were reported in central Khartoum, as artillery fire from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensified, according to an Al-Arabiya correspondent.
Earlier on Thursday, the Sudanese army carried out airstrikes and artillery bombardments in Khartoum, engaging in fierce ground battles against the RSF in the capital’s three major cities: Khartoum, Khartoum North (Bahri), and Omdurman.
The escalating conflict in Sudan continues to destabilize the capital as both sides vie for control, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The city of El Fasher in Darfur, western Sudan, is witnessing its fiercest battles yet after the RSF launched a major offensive, breaking through a months-long siege.
Witnesses reported heavy street fighting as RSF militants attacked from three directions, advancing towards residential areas near the army’s 6th Infantry Division headquarters.
Earlier this month, Al-Mnifi met with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, at the Libyan Permanent Mission in New York.
The meeting focused on the current political and economic situation in Libya and aimed at addressing the challenges facing the country.
During their discussion, Al-Mnifi and Aboul Gheit emphasized the importance of revitalizing the trilateral meetings to advance the political process in Libya.
