Jordan and Iraq signed the second amendment to their electricity sale contract on Thursday, extending the agreement between the Jordanian National Electric Power Company and Iraq’s General Electricity Transmission Company for the central region.

The extension aims to continue supplying the Al-Rutba region of Iraq with electricity via the 132 kV transmission line from Jordan’s Risha region in Mafraq Governorate.

Following the signing, General Manager of the National Electric Power Company, Sufian Al-Bataina, stated that the amendment prolongs the energy supply contract for the Al-Rutba area until a 400 kV interconnection project is completed. The initial agreement was set to expire on September 27, 2024, after being signed in February.

Al-Bataina emphasized the significance of the Jordan-Iraq power connection in bolstering cooperation between the two nations. He noted that the project plays a vital role in stabilizing the electrical systems and supports broader goals of establishing a shared Arab energy market.

The work on the 400 kV electricity connection between Jordan and Iraq, from the Risha substation in Jordan to the Al-Qaim substation in Iraq, is expected to be completed before mid-2025.
