Floods in southern Morocco swept away a bus, leaving two passengers dead and 14 others missing, according to local authorities on Saturday.

The incident followed heavy rainstorms late Friday, which triggered exceptional flooding in Tata province, leading to the collapse of homes and the tragic bus incident. Thirteen people were rescued.

These floods come amid an ongoing crisis in Morocco, which is experiencing its worst drought in nearly 40 years, severely impacting its agriculture sector. Earlier this month, floods in the same region killed at least 18 people.

Morocco is among the world’s most water-stressed countries, with a significant portion of its population dependent on agriculture.

Experts warn that climate change is intensifying extreme weather events like storms and droughts, making such disasters more frequent.

While the rains provide some relief, experts emphasize that sustained rainfall over a longer period is crucial to replenishing groundwater and raising dam water levels.
