Egypt is closely monitoring a tragic bus accident in Derna, Libya, that claimed the lives of 11 Egyptians and injured 15 others, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

The bus, carrying 26 undocumented Egyptian migrants, overturned on the Desert Road in Derna on Wednesday.

Osama Ali, spokesperson for the Tripoli ambulance service, confirmed that two of the injured are in critical condition, while others sustained fractures and minor injuries. The driver, also Egyptian, has been apprehended.

In response, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty instructed the consular department and Egypt’s Consulate General in Benghazi to coordinate with Libyan authorities and ensure care for the injured. Efforts are underway to repatriate the bodies of the deceased after completing necessary procedures.

Egypt extended condolences to the victims’ families, reaffirming its ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration through its national strategy, implemented since 2016, to curb human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
