Sabha Airport in Libya announced the resumption of flights on Wednesday after completing a comprehensive inspection of all airport systems and installing lighting in all sections.
Today, the airport is scheduled to receive an Afriqiyah Airways flight from Benina Airport and will also see a departure to Borg El Arab Airport in Alexandria, Egypt.
The resumption of flights is part of efforts by the Airports Authority to improve the airport’s infrastructure, thereby increasing its capacity to handle more international flights and facilitating air transport between the southern region of Libya and international destinations.
The closure of Libya’s Sabha Airport has been tied to the ongoing instability and security challenges in the region. Sabha, located in southern Libya, has been affected by clashes between various militias and local forces, which has impacted overall safety and infrastructure in the area. As a result, the airport has faced intermittent closures, limiting its ability to serve as a transportation hub.
Sabha Airport had previously suspended operations due to security concerns related to the presence of armed groups in the region, making it difficult for the airport to function safely. This closure lasted for extended periods, as the airport required significant repairs to its infrastructure, including essential systems like lighting and air traffic control, to meet international safety standards.
