Severe weather conditions in southern Algeria over the past 48 hours have led to major road closures in several regions, including Illizi, Tamanrasset, and Djanet.

Heavy rainfall has caused significant water accumulation, making key routes impassable, according to reports from the National Gendarmerie on Friday.

Among the affected roads is National Road No. 3, which connects Illizi and Djanet. Floodwaters have submerged parts of the road near the village of Fadnoun, creating dangerous conditions for motorists.

Additionally, traffic on the road near Oued Ourt in the Illizi municipality has become challenging due to rising water levels.

In Tamanrasset, National Road No. 55A is currently closed near the village of Dahmouni in the Abalessa municipality, with high water levels and heavy mud making passage impossible.

Similarly, the stretch of National Road No. 55 linking Djanet and Tamanrasset is blocked at the entrance of the Bir El-Haouas municipality due to floodwaters.

Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads. The National Gendarmerie emphasized the dangers posed by the rising water levels and called on motorists to respect the road closures to ensure their safety.

Flooding in Algeria, particularly in its southern regions, has become a recurring issue in recent years, driven by unpredictable weather patterns and heavy rainstorms.

This region, known for its arid desert landscape, is ill-equipped to handle sudden downpours, often resulting in flash floods. Infrastructure in these remote areas is especially vulnerable, and with limited drainage systems in place, roads quickly become submerged during heavy rain.
