German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised Egypt’s efforts in brokering a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas during a joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at Al-Ittihadiya Palace.

The press conference followed Steinmeier’s visit to Egypt, marking the first by a German president in 25 years.

Steinmeier highlighted that Germany, the second-largest donor to Palestinian territories, including Gaza, has tripled its aid since 2023, thanks in part to Egypt’s assistance in delivering the aid.

He emphasized the importance of long-term security and stability in the Middle East to achieve a two-state solution. Steinmeier also condemned the Houthi activities in the Red Sea, pointing out the negative impact on Egypt’s Suez Canal, which is crucial for Europe and Germany. He stressed the importance of international waterway safety, noting Germany’s involvement in Operation Aspides, launched in February 2024, to address threats to international shipping.

The German president also discussed regional crises in Libya and Sudan, expressing gratitude to Egypt for managing the refugee influx and urging Europe to take a more active role in resolving the conflict in Sudan.
