The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated that countries must not accept “the blatant disregard for international law, including binding Security Council resolutions and orders from the International Court of Justice,” in the war on Gaza or any other conflict situation around the world.
During his briefing to the Human Rights Council, Türk reported that since October 7th, over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, with tens of thousands injured, and thousands still under the rubble in Gaza. He highlighted the daily struggle for survival faced by Palestinians, with nearly 1.9 million people forcibly displaced across the strip and approximately 10,000 Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons or in temporary military facilities, “many of whom are arbitrarily detained,” with more than 50 people dying due to inhumane conditions and mistreatment.
Türk added that “lethal and destructive operations, some on a scale not seen in the past two decades” in the West Bank, are exacerbating the catastrophic situation there, according to the High Commissioner.
