Kamala Harris, speaking at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, pledged to work towards a ceasefire in Gaza and voiced her commitment to stand with Ukraine, distancing herself from what she described as Donald Trump’s cozy relations with dictators.
The Vice President of the United States emphasized the urgency of reaching both a hostage agreement and a ceasefire in Gaza, committing to the Palestinian right to self-determination. On the topic of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Harris affirmed that her presidency would strongly support Ukraine and NATO allies.
In her criticism of Republican candidate Donald Trump, Harris accused him of wanting to regress the country with a highly conservative agenda. “We know what a second Trump term would look like. It’s all laid out in the 2025 Project written by his closest advisors, aiming to take our country backwards,” Harris stated.
Additionally, Harris outlined her domestic agenda, promising tax cuts aimed at supporting the middle class, a group she claims Trump neglects. “Instead of the tax increases Trump supports, we will implement a middle-class tax cut benefiting over 100 million Americans,” she declared.
Harris sought to redefine her image to America and highlight the stark contrasts between her and Trump as she accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race. Amidst cheers at the conclusion of the convention, she expressed, “On behalf of everyone whose story can only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination for the President of the United States.”
The White House stated that President Biden called Harris to wish her luck before her speech.
Outside the convention venue, approximately 200 pro-Palestinian supporters gathered to protest the U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. This issue, which has not received significant attention at the convention, poses a divisive challenge within the Democratic Party and could potentially impact their standing in the elections.
