The United Nations has strongly condemned the airstrike that targeted the city of Omdurman on Sunday night, resulting in the death of 22 people and injuring dozens more.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that Antonio Guterres “condemns the airstrike in Omdurman, Sudan, which resulted in the killing of at least 22 people.”
Guterres expressed concern about reports of renewed fighting in the states of North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile. He denounced the flagrant disregard for humanitarian law and human rights.
He reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a commitment to a permanent ceasefire.
The Ministry of Health in Khartoum State announced on Saturday the death of 22 civilians and the injury of many others due to the aerial bombardment of the Dar Al-Salam Al-Amiriya area in Omdurman, early Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) condemned the airstrike carried out by “rebel forces on innocent civilians,” stating that 31 people were killed.
It is worth noting that the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa are making concerted efforts to mediate a resolution to the crisis in Sudan.
The spokesperson for the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Nour Mahmoud Sheik Friday, announced that a session of IGAD heads of state, within the framework of the Sudan Quartet Mechanism, is scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa on Monday.
