Russia might deploy nuclear weapons in reaction to U.S. plans to station missiles in Germany, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday.

“I’m not ruling out any options,” Ryabkov told the state-run Interfax news agency. He emphasized the need for Russia to calibrate its responses considering NATO’s combined capabilities, expressing a preference for the “widest possible optionality.”

The White House announced during a recent NATO summit that it would periodically station long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, in Germany starting in 2026 to act as a deterrent.

Moscow criticized this move, accusing Washington of taking a step toward a new Cold War.
