The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan has announced the establishment of a NATO Liaison Office in the country, aimed at enhancing collaborative relations with the alliance.
In a joint statement with NATO, the Ministry outlined the decision to open the office in Amman. This move is part of NATO’s 2024 summit in Washington, where a comprehensive action plan was adopted to bolster cooperation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The plan highlights NATO’s commitment to strengthening ties with southern neighboring countries, including the establishment of its first liaison office in the region.
The decision to open this office, initially announced in the final communiqué of NATO’s 2023 summit in Lithuania, marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Jordan and NATO.
It acknowledges Jordan’s pivotal role in promoting regional and international stability and commends its extensive efforts in combating transnational threats such as terrorism and violent extremism.
As a NATO representation office, the new liaison office will facilitate enhanced political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest between NATO and Jordan.
It will ensure continuous communication, leading to a deeper understanding of national and regional contexts and progress in partnership programs and activities.
These activities include conferences, training programs, and workshops on strategic analysis, emergency planning, public diplomacy, cybersecurity, climate change management, crisis management, and civil defense.
The establishment of the NATO Liaison Office in Amman builds on nearly three decades of robust bilateral relations, particularly through NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue.
It aims to enhance political dialogue and streamline practical cooperation between NATO and Jordan, reflecting the evolving and deepening relationship since 1996.
This new development signifies NATO’s recognition of Jordan’s strategic importance and its ongoing commitment to supporting regional security and cooperation initiatives.
