The Joint Maritime Information Center for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden reported on Monday evening that the cargo ship Verbeena, flying the flag of Palau, was towed away from danger after being attacked by the Yemeni Houthi group on June 13. The ship is now en route to its next port of call.
The center had previously reported that the Verbeena was targeted with three missiles while transiting the Gulf of Aden, approximately 98 nautical miles east of Aden, Yemen.
The Houthi group later claimed responsibility for the attack.
The center added that the cargo ship caught fire due to the Houthi attack, and the crew was unable to extinguish it. The U.S. Central Command reported that the ship was flooded after the crew was rescued and transferred to safety, noting that one crew member was injured during the attack.
Since last fall, the Houthis have targeted cargo ships with missiles and drones, which they claim are linked to Israel, in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean.
Since January 2024, a U.S.-led coalition has conducted airstrikes targeting Houthi positions in various parts of Yemen in response to their maritime attacks.
