Vanessa Huguenin, the Communications Officer at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), confirmed that over 60,000 people have fled due to fighting in the town of Sinja in Sudan’s Sennar State, Southeast Sudan. Additionally, security is absent in the nearby areas of Abu Hajar and Al-Dali.
According to UN information center, most of the displaced individuals following the clashes in Sinja are moving east towards the neighboring state of Al-Qadarif. Huguenin emphasized that the UN office and its partners are present in Al-Qadarif State and prepared to receive those displaced by the conflicts, providing food supplies.
She further stated, “Once again, women, children, and entire families are forced to flee, leaving everything behind, amid a severe deterioration in the situation across the country facing its worst food insecurity in twenty years.”
Huguenin continued, “What we need – and this is no different from other parts of the country – is for parties to immediately de-escalate tensions, refrain from targeting civilians, and ensure safe passage for those fleeing the fighting in Sinja and other areas in Sudan.”
