German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed Germany’s opposition to the sending of cluster munitions to Ukraine.

As a party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, Germany joins 111 other states in opposing the supply of these weapons.

Both Ukraine and Russia, along with the United States, which plans to make the delivery, are not parties to the convention.

When asked about the expected delivery, Baerbock emphasized Germany’s adherence to the Oslo agreement.

The agreement, opened for signature in Oslo in 2008, prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of cluster munitions.

Media reports have suggested that the US administration under President Joe Biden will announce a new military aid package for Ukraine, including cluster munitions, the Pentagon has yet to officially confirm the transfer. Discussions on this matter are ongoing.

Germany’s position aligns with its commitment to international agreements and conventions aimed at reducing the harm caused by cluster munitions.
