The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has donated $8 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to aid humanitarian efforts in Sudan. This significant collaboration, formalized at WHO’s Geneva headquarters, aims to improve health conditions in Sudan.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and WHO signed the agreement, with Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development Affairs, representing the UAE, and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, representing WHO. Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, also attended.
This donation aligns with the UAE’s commitment to global humanitarian relief, supporting WHO’s efforts in conflict-affected regions. The funds will enhance healthcare infrastructure, emergency response, and disease prevention programs in Sudan.
“The WHO’s work in Sudan saves lives daily, and we must support this mission,” said Lana Zaki Nusseibeh. “Our partnership with WHO has benefitted people in crisis across the region. We stand with Sudan’s people.”
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added, “With partner support, WHO will continue meeting urgent health needs in Sudan and neighboring countries. We thank the UAE for this generous pledge. Together, we can protect the most vulnerable.”
This donation is part of the UAE’s $70 million commitment to urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan, supporting UN agencies and humanitarian organizations. The UAE pledged $100 million in April at the ‘International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighboring Countries,’ bringing its total aid to Sudan over the past decade to more than $3.5 billion.
