England, France, and the Netherlands have secured their places in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Euro 2024, benefiting from Spain’s 1-0 victory over Albania on Monday in the final round of Group B matches.
Each of the three teams—England, France, and the Netherlands—has accumulated four points after two rounds and has guaranteed their advancement as one of the top four third-placed teams.
This assurance comes ahead of their final group stage matches on Tuesday. England, the leader of Group C, will face Slovenia; Group D leader Netherlands will play Austria; and Group D’s second-placed team France will take on Poland.
These teams join Germany and Switzerland from Group A, Spain and Italy from Group B, and Portugal, which has already secured its spot at the top of Group F before their final match against Georgia on Wednesday.
Eight more teams are expected to join the ranks of those advancing to the Round of 16 as the third and final round of group-stage matches concludes on Wednesday.
UEFA is gearing up for a historic moment at Euro 2024 with plans to display VAR decisions on stadium screens in Germany.
The announcement follows last month’s decision to ensure refereeing calls are explained to international captains, who are to be the only players allowed to communicate with officials.
Players who bypass their captain and show disrespect or dissent towards referees will be penalized with a yellow card.
Additionally, UEFA has confirmed that referees will explain their decisions to the crowd through stadium screens during the tournament in June and July.
UEFA’s managing director for refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, highlighted this new initiative, stating, “This is something new. I think it’s very, very, very interesting.”
Rosetti explained that after the VAR opinion is given, a technical explanation will be provided to the public in real time.
