UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, confirmed today, Tuesday, that the war in Sudan is causing immense destruction and suffering. He stated that “Sudan is being destroyed in a war between two parties,” holding both sides accountable for committing war crimes. Türk urged the Sudanese government to investigate these violations and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
The conflict in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023, involves the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemetti). The fighting has primarily affected the capital, Khartoum, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths and injuries. Despite mediation efforts by Arab, African, and international parties, a permanent ceasefire has not been achieved.
Various international bodies have attempted mediation efforts. Reports from entities like the Sudanese Professionals Association and international media have highlighted the challenges faced by civilians, including displacement, lack of access to healthcare, and targeted violence.
Reports and studies by the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have documented the devastating impact of modern warfare on civilian populations, including displacement, injury, and death. The rising percentage highlights the urgent need for stronger international measures to protect civilians.
