An agreement was reached between the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority and Norwegian energy company Scatec for the allocation of land in West Sohag to construct a five GWs wind power plant with $5 billion in investments.
“It will contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Egyptian government with regard to doubling renewable energy contribution to its energy mix,” he added
The project is expected to have significant economic benefits, as per an official statement. It is projected to create approximately 8,000 job opportunities during the construction phase, with 300 permanent positions available once the plant is operational.
Pilskog highlighted Scatec’s successful track record in Egypt, having completed six solar power plants as part of Egypt’s Benban projects.
Egypt aims to reduce its carbon footprint by updating its Nationally Determined Contributions, which were released in June. The updated plan includes more ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and securing the necessary finances to achieve them.
