Qatar has pledged $75 million to support humanitarian efforts for the Syrian people, adding to its contributions over the past years.
This announcement was made by Lulwa bint Rashid Al-Khater, Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, at the Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region’ Conference in Brussels.
Minister Al-Khater expressed hope that the conference would result in adequate financial commitments and that the multitude of global humanitarian crises would not detract from commitments to Syria and its people.
Despite the importance of continuing such conferences and efforts to mobilize financial support and encourage ongoing donor commitments, Minister Al-Khater emphasized the need to confront harsh realities, including international and regional policies that have prolonged the conflict on the basis of stalemate and perpetuated divisions and displacement.
She noted that the Syrian crisis, despite its severity and uniqueness, is not an isolated case and can be compared to other global conflicts and civil wars.
Al-Khater highlighted that resolving such conflicts requires strength, courage, and sincerity from the conflicting parties, adding that even if these qualities are present, a decisive political settlement is not guaranteed without regional and international consensus.
She concluded with a reflective question on whether the collective imagination could transcend the current moment to envision a future for Syria where refugees return safely without retribution, preserving Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, and where both infrastructure and people are rehabilitated.
The EU pledged €2.12 billion for 2024 and 2025 to support both Syrians inside Syria and those in neighbouring countries, as well as their host communities in Türkiye, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
