Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus to discuss the return of Syrian refugees and bilateral relations between the two countries.

Assad emphasised the importance of investing in infrastructure and reconstruction to create favorable conditions for refugee returns.

He stated that the refugee issue should be approached as a humanitarian and moral matter, devoid of political manipulation.

“We reaffirm that the refugee file is a solely humanitarian and moral issue that should not be politicised in any way,” a statement released by Assad’s office read.

Syria has been embroiled in a civil war for the past 13 years, resulting in significant casualties and the displacement of millions of Syrians.

Both government-held areas and opposition-held regions, particularly in the northwest, suffer from poverty and deteriorated infrastructure.
Jordan, sharing a border with Syria and hosting approximately 1.3 million Syrian refugees, played a pivotal role in facilitating Syria’s reintegration into the Arab League.

In May, Jordan organised regional talks involving officials from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Egypt, aiming to find a political solution to the long-standing crisis.
