The Jordanian Army announced on Thursday that it had successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of drugs from Syria.
In a statement, a military source said, “The Eastern Military Zone, in coordination with military security agencies and the Anti-Narcotics Department, intercepted an attempt to infiltrate and smuggle a significant amount of narcotics from Syrian territory.”
The statement detailed that the engagement resulted in the deaths of two smugglers, injuries to others, and their subsequent retreat into Syrian territory. Additionally, several weapons were seized, and the confiscated items have been handed over to the relevant authorities.
Last year, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi stated that Jordan is taking all necessary measures to combat drug smuggling across the Syrian border, emphasizing the country’s commitment to safeguarding its national security against this growing threat.
Speaking via video conference at the International Coalition to Combat Synthetic Drugs ministerial meeting, Safadi noted that “attempts to smuggle drugs across the Syrian border are ongoing and frequent,” highlighting that more than 65 million Captagon pills were confiscated over the past two years.
