King Charles III of the United Kingdom has ratified a crucial piece of legislation from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The royal assent was announced in the House of Lords today, Thursday, officially turning the Rwanda Safety (Asylum and Immigration) Bill into law.

Royal assent is the final stage in the legislative process, effectively a formality confirming Parliament’s earlier decision this week to approve the bill after a prolonged battle between the government and opponents of the plan.

The bill received parliamentary approval in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Prime Minister Sunak stated that he expects the first deportation flights to Rwanda to commence within 10 to 12 weeks following the legislation’s approval.
