Microsoft President Brad Smith highlighted the benefits of regulating artificial intelligence (AI), announcing plans to join forces with the Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in this regard.

Smith and Musk sought to court regulators and lawmakers with calls for regulating AI.

“Our intention is to offer constructive contributions to help inform the work ahead,” Smith said in a blog post. He subsequently reiterated his message at a conference in Brussels.

In the same vein, he indicated that Microsoft’s five-point blueprint for governing AI includes government-led AI safety frameworks. It also has safety brakes for AI systems that control critical infrastructure and ensures academic access to AI aligns with the legislation proposed by the European Union (EU).

Meanwhile, the EU is working out the details of rules known as the “AI Act”, a global first that could set the benchmark for other countries.

Smith also called on the EU, the US, G7 countries, India, and Indonesia to work together on AI governance in line with their shared values and principles.
