Saudi authorities have launched an investigation following an exchange of gunfire outside the US consulate in Jeddah, which resulted in the death of an assailant and a Nepalese security guard.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, and officials have not yet determined a motive for the attack.

According to a police spokesman quoted by the official Saudi Press Agency, the incident unfolded when a man in a car stopped in front of the consulate building and exited the vehicle brandishing a weapon.

Security forces quickly responded, leading to an exchange of fire that resulted in the death of the assailant. Tragically, the Nepalese security guard succumbed to his injuries later on.

The shooting incident took place on the final day of the hajj pilgrimage in nearby Mecca, where over 1.6 million foreign pilgrims arrived in Jeddah and proceeded to Mecca to participate in the religious rituals.

Authorities are currently conducting security investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
