Washington is actively working to withdraw a UN Security Council resolution that supports granting Palestine full membership status, according to Sky News Arabia, citing official Palestinian sources.
The report reveals that Washington is pressuring the Arab group to retract the resolution, which is scheduled for a vote tomorrow, Thursday.
The American administration has reportedly threatened to use its veto power to block the resolution if it is brought to a vote.
Despite the U.S. veto threat, Palestinian and Arab leaders are determined not to withdraw the proposal and intend to proceed with the voting process.
Diplomatic sources earlier today indicated that the Security Council is set to hold a session on Thursday to vote on the resolution recommending Palestine for UN membership.
Last week, the Security Council referred the Palestinian Authority’s request for full membership to the committee responsible for admitting new members.
Palestine initially applied for full UN membership in September 2011 but failed to secure the necessary nine votes out of the 15-member council, with the U.S. consistently threatening to use its veto power.
Washington and other Western powers warn that UN recognition of a Palestinian state could nullify previous agreements that support negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians for establishing a Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel.
Adel Al-Assoumi, President of the Arab Parliament, has stated that the parliament has been in continuous session since the onset of the assault on Gaza.
During the session, Al-Assoumi emphasized the significant repercussions of the ongoing collapse in the sector and stressed the importance of mobilizing countries worldwide to compel the occupying forces to cease fire.
