GCC Calls for Stability in Middle East

Jasim Mohammed Al-Budiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized the importance of preserving regional and global security in light of recent and rapid developments in the Middle East.

In a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Sunday, Al-Budiwi urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent any further escalation that threatens the stability of the region and the safety of its people.

He stressed the necessity for all parties to engage in collective efforts and to adopt a diplomatic approach as an effective means to resolve conflicts and ensure the security and stability of the region.

Al-Budiwi also highlighted the role of the international community in supporting peace efforts to avoid any repercussions that could lead to further escalation.

The call for calm comes as Iran launched a significant attack on Israel on Saturday, targeting multiple sites including a major air base in the Negev Desert with Khaibar missiles, the same base from which an attack had been launched on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

According to Avichay Adraee, spokesperson for the Israeli military, Iran fired over 200 rockets at Israel. “More than 200 aerial threats were launched at Israel, where dozens of cruise missiles and drones were intercepted outside Israeli territory, and the vast majority of Iranian ballistic missiles entering Israeli airspace were intercepted,” Adraee stated.

Following Israel’s call for an inquiry into the Iranian attacks, the Security Council responded immediately. A spokesperson for the Maltese mission, which currently chairs the United Nations Security Council, announced that an emergency session would be held on Sunday to discuss the attacks and their implications.

This surge in military actions raises concerns about the stability of the Middle East, making international diplomacy and cooperation more crucial than ever.

The GCC’s call for restraint and diplomatic engagement underscores the complex interplay of regional and global dynamics in addressing these challenges.
