James Elder, a spokesperson for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has issued a stark warning about the dire situation in Gaza, which is teetering on the edge of devastation and famine due to the ongoing Israeli aggression, now in its 186th day.
According to the Wafa News Agency, Elder stated that Gaza, home to 2.3 million Palestinians, is “on the brink of destruction and famine.” He elaborated, “Palestinians are struggling to survive under extremely harsh conditions.”
Elder shared his disappointment over the shattered hopes for peace after the United Nations Security Council’s decision for a ceasefire. “Everywhere I went in Gaza, a ceasefire was what people most requested and pleaded for… There was hope… But this hope was crushed by the sound of bombs.”
He further revealed that Israel attacked the city of Rafah just two days following the Security Council’s ceasefire resolution. “I was at a hospital in Rafah where there were children with serious injuries from the bombing… Despite the ceasefire decision, the bombing continues throughout the day without stop.”
Elder urgently called for the immediate implementation of the Security Council’s decision, stressing, “This resolution must be put into action… We need to ensure a ceasefire so that the children and families who have endured this pain for months can actually wake up in the morning knowing they are safe.”
