United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly denounced an attack on Iran’s diplomatic compound in Damascus, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation, according to his spokesperson.

The alleged Israeli airstrike targeted the building housing Iran’s ambassador and consular services in Syria, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals, including two high-ranking officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Guterres emphasized the potential dire consequences of any misjudgment, warning that it could exacerbate the already volatile situation in the region and lead to a broader conflict.

The Secretary-General highlighted the immense suffering endured by civilians in Syria, Lebanon, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and the broader Middle East, urging all parties to prioritize de-escalation and peace efforts.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized Guterres’s concerns, stressing the urgent need for all parties to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
