The Mediterranean Parliament has announced the awarding of its 2024 “Peace Champion” prize to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. In a statement released today, the Parliament highlighted that this award is annually given to individuals and organizations for their significant contributions in various fields, significantly enhancing political, social, economic development, environmental protection, culture, and interfaith dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions, thereby promoting peace and prosperity.
The statement added that President El-Sisi was chosen for the 2024 award for his remarkable efforts in achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, facilitating the delivery of vital aid to Palestinian residents, and securing the release of hostages. His leadership and dedication have played a pivotal role in enhancing peace and stability in the region.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized Egypt’s ongoing efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza, negotiate a permanent ceasefire, and advocate for a two-state solution align with the United Nations Charter and relevant resolutions, affirming the country’s critical role in protecting international and regional peace and security.
Additionally, Egypt’s commitment to regional stability extends beyond the Middle East. President El-Sisi has also reasserted Egypt’s support for Somalia’s security and stability, as highlighted by his phone call with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud. During this call, they discussed enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation across various fields, underlining Egypt’s active role in regional diplomacy and peacekeeping
It was also mentioned that the official announcement of President El-Sisi’s award will be made during the opening session of the 18th General Assembly of the organization, scheduled to be held on May 15, 2024, in Braga, Portugal. The ceremony will honor President El-Sisi’s exemplary leadership and commendable contributions to enhancing peace and cooperation in the Mediterranean region.
