In Abyan province along Yemen’s southern coast, an ambush by Al-Qaeda, an organization banned in Russia and many other countries, resulted in the death and injury of seven soldiers.

A local authority source in Abyan disclosed to Sputnik that Al-Qaeda operatives ambushed a patrol of the Fifth Brigade in the Support and Reinforcement Forces belonging to the Southern Transitional Council, which advocates for the separation of southern Yemen.

The attack occurred as the patrol was passing through the west of Wadi Omran, east of the Mudiyah district in northeastern Abyan.

The ambush led to three soldiers’ deaths and injuries to four others, with two in critical condition. Additionally, the military vehicle of the Second Battalion in the Fifth Brigade was destroyed.

This incident follows a similar attack by Al-Qaeda last Sunday, which claimed the lives of two soldiers and wounded three others in a military vehicle south of Wadi Omran, east of the Mudiyah district.

On September 18, the Southern Transitional Council’s forces in Yemen announced they had taken control of the strategic Wadi Omran areas, previously used as a stronghold by Al-Qaeda elements.

Since the Southern Transitional Council declared the launch of “Operation Eastern Arrows” on 22 August 2022, to secure the coastal province of Abyan from Al-Qaeda elements, attacks by the organization on military and security forces have increased, causing deaths and injuries.

The presence of Al-Qaeda elements has escalated in several areas of Yemen since the conflict, now entering its tenth year, began over power between the internationally recognized government and the “Ansar Allah” group.
