Algeria has announced that it will hold early presidential elections on 7 September, 2024, three months earlier than scheduled, according to a statement from the president’s office released on March 21. The statement, issued after a meeting chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and attended by lawmakers and the army’s chief of staff, did not offer further details on the decision.

“It was decided to hold early presidential elections on September 7, 2024,” read the statement. Tebboune, whose current term was set to expire in December, has not indicated whether he will seek re-election, and there has been no immediate explanation provided for the early election.

Elected in December 2019 amidst pro-democracy protests that led to the resignation of longtime president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Tebboune, who will turn 79 in November, won 58 percent of the vote. He previously served as a prime minister under Bouteflika, who passed away in September 2021.
