Microsoft & Meta Accuse Apple of Manipulating App Store Regulations

Meta Platforms Inc., Microsoft Corp., X Corp., and Match Group Inc. have united to oppose Apple Inc.’s proposed changes to its App Store rules, urging a federal judge to dismiss Apple’s plan to permit external payment options within the store.

The four companies, known for their popular apps, including Fortnite-maker Epic Games, have voiced their concerns over Apple’s decision to impose a 27% commission fee for transactions conducted outside of the App Store.

Apple’s announcement in January to allow developers to process payments externally received criticism from software-makers due to the commission fee it intends to levy.

In an amicus brief submitted to the court, the companies detailed how Apple’s in-app payment requirements negatively impact them and their users. For instance, Meta disclosed that Apple’s requirement for it to pay the in-app purchase (IAP) fee for its advertising product significantly raises the cost for users. Meta argues that this cost escalation could have been avoided if users were directed to Meta’s own payment options.

Responding to inquiries about the amicus brief, Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz referred to the company’s earlier statement asserting compliance with the court’s injunction. Apple maintains that unregulated external payment links could jeopardize user privacy and security, disrupt the ecosystem’s integrity, and lead to user confusion.

Apple is set to file a response before an upcoming hearing on April 30th to address the enforcement of the injunction.
