The European Union hopes to reach an agreement on the aid program for Tunisia before the European summit on June 28-29, according to a senior European official in Brussels.

The official told the Italian news agency “AKI” that “Tunisia must first reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.”

During a meeting with journalists ahead of the European Foreign Affairs Council meeting next Monday in Luxembourg, the official said, “As far as our legal framework is concerned, we can only provide full financial assistance if there is an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. We are working on it and will continue to do so.”

The official also noted that the number of irregular Tunisian migrants arriving on the Italian coast has “drastically decreased in recent weeks.”
