Did Greece Ignore Air Surveillance Offer Before Migrant Tragedy?

Tensions between the European Union Border and Coast Guard Agency, known as Frontex, and Greece have escalated following a tragic incident in the Mediterranean. Last week, Frontex offered to send a plane to monitor an overcrowded fishing boat, which later sank, resulting in a feared loss of life reaching into the hundreds. However, Frontex received no response from Greek authorities, indicating a breakdown in communication.

The incident has highlighted the strained relationship between Frontex and Athens, as both parties face scrutiny regarding their roles in what could be the most devastating shipwreck during the ongoing migration crisis in the Mediterranean.

A spokesperson for Frontex revealed that upon detecting the vessel and notifying the Greek and Italian authorities, the agency offered additional assistance, including dispatching an aircraft from Italy. However, the Greek coast guard failed to provide any response to Frontex’s offer.

When pressed for comment on the lack of response, the Greek coast guard declined to provide details regarding the operational planning, maintaining silence on the matter.

The absence of communication between Frontex and Greek authorities has raised concerns and cast a spotlight on the response and coordination efforts during maritime emergencies. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by both Frontex and Greece in managing the migration crisis, underscoring the need for improved cooperation and effective communication to prevent future tragedies at sea.
