The European Commission released frozen funds from the European Union’s aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) amounting to 50 million euros ($54 million) on Friday. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated in a declaration, “Innocent Palestinians should not have to pay the price for the terrorist crimes of Hamas.” She also announced an additional allocation of 68 million euros in aid to other organizations in the region.
The Commission had suspended funding for UNRWA and called for an independent audit of the agency’s accounts following Israel’s accusation that about 12 of the organization’s staff were involved in the October 7th attack led by Hamas. The Commission mentioned that the decision to release the funding was based on commitments from UNRWA to conduct this investigation and review assurances to prevent its staff from participating in “terrorist activities.”
The suspension of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by several countries came after Israel accused approximately 12 UNRWA staff members of participating in a Hamas-led attack on October 7. Following these allegations, countries such as the US, UK, EU, France, Germany, and Japan announced the suspension of their funding to UNRWA, raising concerns about the impact this would have on the agency’s ability to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees, particularly in Gaza.
The UNRWA, established in 1949, plays a critical role in supporting Palestinian refugees by providing education, healthcare, and aid services. It operates in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, serving millions of Palestinian refugees. In 2022, the agency received significant contributions from various countries and the European Union, with the US, Germany, the EU, and Sweden being among the largest individual donors. The agency’s operations are crucial, especially in Gaza, where it runs schools, healthcare clinics, and distributes humanitarian aid.
