Syrian state media reported on Sunday that the Syrian armed forces have successfully intercepted and shot down seven weaponized drones targeting military positions and villages in the countryside of Hama and Idlib. According to the defense ministry, the drones, believed to have been launched by “terrorists,” were deployed with the intention of causing harm to both military installations and civilian areas.
The ministry stated that the unmanned aerial vehicles, operated by these terrorist groups, were specifically dispatched to destroy military positions as well as villages and towns in both Idlib and Hama. This incident underscores the recent intensification of drone attacks by rebels in northern Syria, particularly in the northwestern governorate of Idlib.
In recent times, rebels have increased their use of drones to carry out attacks against government-controlled areas. Notably, one of the deadliest attacks occurred in October 2023 when a drone struck a military academy graduation event in the governorate of Homs, resulting in the tragic loss of over 80 military personnel and civilians.
The Syrian armed forces’ successful interception of the seven drones signifies a crucial defense against such aerial threats, emphasizing the ongoing challenges faced by the government in countering the evolving tactics employed by rebel groups in the region.
