In a significant meeting held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry welcomed Karim Khan, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today.

Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, detailed that Minister Shoukry was keen to hear from Prosecutor Khan about the ongoing investigations concerning Israeli violations within the ICC’s jurisdiction in Palestine, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Shoukry underscored the crucial role of the ICC in addressing these matters.

During the discussion, Shoukry highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinian people in Gaza due to Israeli military actions, blockade policies, and the complete destruction of the infrastructure. He stressed the need for international parties to uphold their legal and humanitarian responsibilities by accurately identifying Israeli violations and intervening to halt these actions.

On his part, ICC Prosecutor Khan confirmed that the situation in Palestine, including conditions in Gaza, is currently under investigation by his office. He emphasized the court’s commitment to transparency in its investigative processes as a guarantee for achieving justice. Khan also acknowledged Egypt’s significant regional role in mitigating the crisis in Gaza, particularly in facilitating the full delivery of humanitarian aid to meet the urgent needs of the territory’s inhabitants.

The meeting between Egypt’s top diplomat and the ICC’s lead prosecutor underscores the international community’s concern over the situation in Palestine and highlights the ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian and legal challenges in the region.
