Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement Evan Faiq Jabro reiterated the government’s seriousness in implementing the decision to close displacement camps by the target date of July 2023. This comes in light of the stability achieved in areas of return and the difficult conditions faced by families in displacement camps.
According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and reported by the Iraqi News Agency, Minister Jabro met with Ghulam Mohammed Ishaq, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Mission in Iraq and Humanitarian Coordinator, and the Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The meeting discussed joint cooperation on the situation of displaced persons and returnees, ways to support them, and providing decent living requirements for returning families.
The statement clarified that the meeting discussed the Ministry’s plan to completely close displacement camps by July 30th, 2023, in accordance with the directives of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The meeting also discussed the recommendations of the Council of Ministers to support stability in areas of return, in cooperation with relevant government agencies and UN organizations.
