UN Envoy Briefs Yemeni Leader on Peace Efforts

United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, held a meeting with Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Chairman, Rashad Al-Alimi, in Aden. The discussion centered on the outcomes of Grundberg’s recent regional tour, focusing on coordinated efforts to restart a comprehensive political process in Yemen under the auspices of the United Nations.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed the evolving situation in Yemen, emphasizing the necessity of international pressure to encourage Houthi militias to actively participate in peace initiatives. The goal is to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people and restore their legitimate institutions.

Chairman Al-Alimi reiterated the PLC’s and the government’s unwavering support for the United Nations and its special envoy. The leadership expressed a commitment to providing all necessary assistance to facilitate the envoy’s duties and responsibilities in line with international legitimacy resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.

Al-Alimi underscored the crucial importance of the UN mediator scrutinizing the actions of the Houthi militias rather than relying on their words. Verification of their commitment to peace efforts includes ending the siege on the city of Taiz, lifting restrictions on the movement of funds, goods, and employee salaries, halting military escalation, and terrorist attacks on civilian facilities.
