The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Friday that 523 children have been killed and 1,218 others injured since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

According to a statement from the Prosecutor General’s Office, as of today, February 9, more than 1,741 children in Ukraine have been affected by the Russian military operation, with 523 children killed and over 1,218 others sustaining injuries of varying severity, as reported by the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

The statement added that the majority of the cases of deceased and injured children were in the Donetsk region with 509 cases, followed by Kharkiv with 328 cases, Kyiv with 130 cases, and Kherson with 146 cases.

The Prosecutor General’s Office clarified that these numbers are not final, as work is ongoing to verify the data received from conflict areas and territories under Russian control.”

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen significant developments, with both sides experiencing advancements and setbacks. In the latter half of 2022, Ukraine’s counter-attacks led to Russian retreats on several fronts, but Russia has since made steady advances in eastern Ukraine. Key moments include Russia’s initial failure to capture Kyiv, reported atrocities, and a shift in focus to the eastern Donbas region. Russia’s gains in Donbas, notably in Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, were significant despite heavy casualties. Ukraine’s counter-offensives, bolstered by Western weaponry and sanctions on Russia, led to notable gains, including in Kherson and Kharkiv province. However, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure since late 2022, and recent months have seen a new Russian offensive with incremental gains, particularly around the city of Bakhmut .
