US President Joe Biden delivered a heartfelt appeal for peace on Thursday, addressing the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine during the annual National Prayer Breakfast on Capitol Hill. In his remarks, Biden expressed not only prayers for peace but also active efforts towards achieving it, emphasizing the importance of security and dignity for both the Israeli and Palestinian people.

Biden highlighted his engagement in efforts to bring hostages home, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and work towards achieving enduring peace in Gaza and Israel. He drew parallels by stating, “just as we’ve worked for peace, security, and dignity for the Ukrainian people as they show incredible resolve and resilience against Putin’s aggression.”

During the breakfast, renowned singer Andrea Bocelli performed “Amazing Grace,” and Biden, visibly moved, wiped his eye with a tissue. The president, seated next to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), participated in prayers from the Old Testament led by Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). Senate Chaplain Barry Black delivered the keynote address.

Speaking for about 10 minutes from the National Statuary Hall, Biden, a devout Catholic, expressed his hope for the nation’s best days ahead and called for a collective belief in honesty, decency, dignity, and respect. He urged seeing each other not as enemies but as fellow human beings, each created in the image of God. The president’s address at the National Prayer Breakfast reflects his commitment to pursuing peace and understanding in the face of global challenges.
