French President Emmanuel Macron was the honored guest at India’s grand annual military parade, as part of a state visit aimed at strengthening France’s strategic ties with the world’s fifth-largest economy.
The Republic Day parade in the heart of New Delhi is a meticulously choreographed event featuring tank formations, fighter jet flyovers, daring motorcycle stunts, and mounted camel units.
This year’s parade coincides with a two-day diplomatic tour, highlighting the deepening partnership between India and France. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hosted by Macron during Bastille Day celebrations in Paris.
Macron has been advocating for increased French engagement in the Asia-Pacific region, especially as Washington and its Western allies seek to align with India as a counterbalance to China, both militarily and economically.
Ahead of his visit to India, Macron’s office underscored India’s importance as a key partner in promoting international peace and security.
Furthermore, France aims to expand its military contracts with India, which has already made substantial purchases of French-made Rafale fighter jets and Scorpene-class submarines in multi-billion-dollar agreements.
India, on the other hand, is actively modernizing its armed forces and diversifying its defense acquisitions beyond its traditional supplier, Russia.
During the parade, a contingent of French soldiers, including a Foreign Legion marching band, participated in the festivities, which commemorated the adoption of India’s constitution in 1950.
Notably, Indian troops had marched down the Champs-Elysees in Paris during last year’s Bastille Day parade, showcasing the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Macron’s visit to India began with a warm welcome, featuring a parade of elephants and a banquet hosted by Prime Minister Modi at an opulent hilltop maharaja’s palace in Jaipur, where the two leaders exchanged their customary bear-hug greeting.
