The United Nations (UN) expressed profound concern over the use and distribution of cluster munitions during the Ukrainian conflict, calling for their immediate cessation.
This statement was made by Adedeji Ebo, the Deputy High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Ukraine, convened at Russia’s request.
Ebo highlighted that reports of the supply and use of cluster munitions throughout the conflict are deeply troubling.
He referenced UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s consistent calls for an immediate end to the use of such munitions, noting that these weapons should have been progressively eliminated and relegated to history.
Furthermore, Ebo pointed out the ongoing military supplies and transfer of arms and ammunition to the Ukrainian armed forces.
According to available information, these supplies have included heavy weaponry such as combat tanks, armored vehicles, aircraft, helicopters, large-caliber artillery systems, and missile systems.
Emphasizing the importance of international law, Ebo stated that any arms delivery must comply with international law, including the resolutions of the UN Security Council.
The use of cluster munitions, known for their potential to cause significant civilian harm and long-lasting impact, has been a topic of international concern, especially in conflict zones.
The UN’s stance reiterates the need for adherence to international humanitarian standards in warfare.
