The Ukrainian Navy’s leadership announced that as of 08:00 local time on Monday, January 22, the Russian military has deployed 13 warships in the Black Sea, including two Kalibr-class “Cruise” missile cruisers capable of launching a total of 14 missiles.
The Ukrainian Navy, in a statement reported by the official Ukrainian news agency “Ukrinform,” also noted that Russia maintains one warship each in the Sea of Azov and the Mediterranean Sea, without any missile carriers among them.
According to “Ukrinform,” Russia had eight warships on a combat mission in the Black Sea on the previous Sunday, including the aircraft carrier “Kalibr.”
This recent escalation has raised concerns in the region.
The Black Sea is of strategic importance for both Russia and Ukraine due to its access to the Mediterranean Sea. Maritime tensions have arisen as both countries seek to assert control over the waters.
Russia’s annexation of Crimea gave it control over the Crimean Peninsula and its access to the Black Sea, leading to disputes over maritime boundaries.
